Formula

Reading time in minutes = Word count ÷ Reading rate in words per minute

Direct answer

Divide the word count by the reading rate you choose in words per minute. The National Center for Education Statistics evaluates reading performance with tasks beyond speed alone, so this calculator reports a schedule estimate rather than a measure of comprehension or proficiency.

Variables and formula

  • Word count: total words in the material.
  • Reading rate: the pace selected for the reader and material, in words per minute.

Reading minutes = Word count / Words per minute

Reproducible example

For 1,500 words at 200 words per minute, 1,500 / 200 = 7.5 minutes.

Interpretation

Use a slower rate for dense, unfamiliar or technical material, and include extra time when you plan to annotate, test understanding or reread sections.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The entered rate is appropriate for the reader and task.
  • The word count is accurate.
  • Breaks, note-taking, comprehension checks and rereading are excluded.

Common mistakes

  • Treating one rate as suitable for every reader and text.
  • Counting headings or citations inconsistently.
  • Equating a quick reading estimate with complete understanding.

Assumptions

  • The entered rate matches the reader, material and purpose.
  • Comprehension checks, breaks, note-taking and rereading are excluded.
