Add the empty bag, clothing and other packed-item weights, then subtract that total from the airline allowance you enter. The U.S. Department of Transportation advises travellers to check the carrier’s limits for the size, weight and number of carry-on pieces; allowances can differ by flight and fare.

Remaining allowance = Airline allowance − Packed weight
Reproducible example
A 3 kg suitcase with 7 kg of clothing and 2 kg of other items weighs 3 + 7 + 2 = 12 kg. Against an entered 23 kg allowance, 23 − 12 = 11 kg remains.
Interpretation
A negative remaining allowance means the measured items are above the entered limit. Recheck the carrier, itinerary and fare before relying on this result; the tool does not supply an airline rule or fee.
