Formula

Tip = Bill subtotal × Tip rate; Total = Bill subtotal + Tip

Direct answer

Multiply the bill subtotal by the tip rate, then add that amount to the subtotal. If a group is splitting equally, divide the resulting total by the number of people. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends assessing actual spending when building a spending plan; this calculator keeps the selected gratuity and total visible as separate amounts.

Variables and formula

  • Bill subtotal: the amount before the chosen gratuity.
  • Tip rate: the percentage you decide to add.
  • People sharing: the number of equal shares to show.

Tip = Bill subtotal × Tip rate

Total bill = Bill subtotal + Tip

Reproducible example

For an $80 subtotal and an 18% tip, 80 × 0.18 = 14.40. The total is $80 + $14.40 = $94.40; split equally between two people, that is $47.20 each.

Interpretation

The rate is an explicit choice, not a recommendation from this calculator. Change the rate or the number of people to see the matching total and equal-share amount.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The selected rate is applied to the entered subtotal only.
  • Tax, service charges and discounts are included only if you include them in the subtotal.
  • An equal split does not account for different individual orders or payments.

Common mistakes

  • Applying the percentage twice.
  • Entering a decimal rate such as 0.18 when the field expects 18.
  • Treating an equal share as an itemized split.

Assumptions

  • The selected rate is applied only to the entered subtotal.
  • An equal split does not account for different individual orders or payments.
