Start with a compatible scope
A useful calculation starts before the formula. Measure values over the same trip, room, device or time period. Record the unit beside each number rather than trying to remember it later.
Keep units explicit
NIST distinguishes decimal prefixes from binary prefixes: GB and GiB do not use the same multiplier. The same discipline applies to kilometres and miles, litres and gallons, square metres and cubic metres, amps and watts.
Use the source that matches the input
For paint, use the coverage stated for the exact product and application. For batteries, use the data sheet and the current at the rating condition. For a room, measure the interior geometry and record any openings or irregular shapes separately.
Reproduce the result
Write down the input values, their units and the date or condition in which they were measured. This makes a result checkable and shows whether a later comparison uses compatible assumptions.
