Weighted grade = sum(Component score * Component weight) / sum(Component weights)Direct answer
Multiply each percentage score by its course weight, add those contributions and divide by the total included weight. East Carolina University’s STEPP program illustrates the same weighted-grade method and notes that simple averaging is not appropriate when course components have different weights.
Variables and formula
- Scores: three course-component scores on a 0-to-100 scale.
- Weights: the syllabus percentages assigned to those components.
- Total weight: the included share of the course; it can be less than 100% when future work is not yet graded.
Weighted grade = sum(Component score * Component weight) / sum(Component weights)
Reproducible example
With scores of 84, 92 and 78 weighted 30%, 30% and 40%, (84 * 30 + 92 * 30 + 78 * 40) / 100 = 84%.
Interpretation
The result is the current weighted percentage for the components entered. Read the total-weight result: if it is not 100%, this is not necessarily the final course grade.
Assumptions and limitations
- Scores are already comparable percentage scores.
- Weights come from the applicable course syllabus.
- Letter-grade thresholds, dropped assignments, curves and minimum-score rules are not modelled.
Common mistakes
- Taking a simple average when weights differ.
- Entering points earned as percentages without converting them.
- Treating a partial-weight result as a final grade.
Assumptions
- Every score is already on a 0-to-100 percentage scale.
- The entered weights match the course syllabus and describe the components included so far.
- Letter-grade cutoffs, dropped work, curves, minimum-component rules and institutional policies are excluded.
