For a proportional conversion, divide the score by 10 and multiply by 15. An 8/10 therefore maps to 8 ÷ 10 × 15 = 12/15. This is a scale conversion only, not a statement about an institution’s grade-equivalence policy.

15-point score = (10-point score ÷ 10) × 15
OpenStax describes a percent proportion as amount divided by base equal to percent divided by 100. The calculator preserves that fraction of the maximum while changing the maximum from 10 to 15.
Reproducible example
For 8 out of 10, the retained fraction is 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8. Multiplying by the new maximum gives 0.8 × 15 = 12, so the proportional result is 12/15.
Interpretation
Use the result only when both scales are meant to be linear and share the same zero point. A receiving school, course or examination authority may instead use bands, a minimum pass mark, rounding or a published table.
Assumptions and limitations
- Both scales start at zero and have maxima of 10 and 15.
- The mapping is linear; it does not weight modules or assessments.
- The calculator does not convert GPA, letter grades, qualifications or institutional admissions decisions.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying the 10-point score by 15 without first dividing by 10.
- Treating a proportional mapping as an official school conversion.
- Combining this scale conversion with a weighted course average.
