Revision note: Initial release for raw equal-weight assessment percentages.

Formula

Percentage score = Correct answers / Total questions * 100

Direct answer

Divide correct answers by total included questions, then multiply by 100. This is a raw equal-weight percentage; the East Carolina University resource explains why course weighting can require a different calculation.

Variables and formula

  • Correct answers: included answers marked correct.
  • Total questions: all included questions.

Percentage score = Correct answers / Total questions * 100

Reproducible example

For 42 correct answers out of 50, 42 / 50 * 100 = 84%. Eight included questions were not correct.

Interpretation

Use the result when every question has identical weight. A syllabus may still apply penalties, partial credit, curves or a separate letter-grade threshold.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Each included question has equal weight.
  • Counts follow the assessment rules.
  • Partial credit, penalties and curves are excluded.

Common mistakes

  • Including dropped questions in only one input.
  • Using this for weighted questions.
  • Treating the raw percentage as a final course grade.

Assumptions

  • Every included question has equal weight.
  • Correct answers are counted consistently with the assessment rules.
  • Partial credit, penalties, dropped questions, curves and grade thresholds are excluded.
