Formula
Kilobytes = Kibibytes × 1.024Direct answer
Multiply the entered kibibytes value by 1.024 to express it in kilobytes (kB). This converts kibibyte (KiB) to kilobyte (kB) within the documented data size family.
Variables and formula
- Kibibytes (KiB): the source value measured in kibibyte.
- Kilobytes (kB): the same quantity expressed in kilobyte.
- Conversion factor: 1.024 kilobytes per kibibyte.
Kilobytes = Kibibytes × 1.024
The generator emits numeric factors with at most 15 significant digits. Calculator results keep up to 10 significant digits for display; this formatting does not increase the precision of the measurement.
Unit definitions and named variants
Source unit: kibibyte (KiB). A kibibyte uses the IEC binary prefix kibi: 1 KiB = 2^10 B = 1024 B exactly. Named variant used: IEC binary multiple; distinct from decimal kilobyte. Reference: Bureau International des Poids et Mesures: The International System of Units (SI), 9th edition, version 4.01; National Institute of Standards and Technology: Definitions of the SI Units: The Binary Prefixes; National Institute of Standards and Technology: NIST Special Publication 330, Section 3: Decimal Multiples and Submultiples of SI Units.
Target unit: kilobyte (kB). A kilobyte uses the decimal SI prefix kilo: 1 kB = 1000 B exactly. Named variant used: Decimal kilobyte; not kibibyte.
The KiB-to-kB direction remains inside the data size quantity; it changes the unit label and numerical scale, not the kind of quantity being measured.
Relationship and precision
The named unit relationships are defined or exact, so the conversion is exact before display rounding and source-measurement uncertainty.
- KiB relationship: The binary-prefix relationship is exact.
- kB relationship: The decimal-prefix relationship is exact.
To audit the factor through the family base unit, divide the raw dataset factors 1024 by 1000. The generator emits that quotient once at 15 significant digits as the canonical direct factor 1.024; runtime calculations do not divide the already-emitted base factors again.
Reproducible example
For 10 kibibytes, 10 × 1.024 = 10.24 kilobytes. Repeating the same multiplication with the stated factor reproduces the displayed conversion before interface rounding.
Directional scale check
Because one kibibyte contains 1.024 kilobytes, the target number is larger than the source number for every positive input. Zero maps to zero, while negative inputs are rejected because this family models non-negative magnitudes.
| Source amount | Calculation | Target amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 KiB | 1 × 1.024 |
1.024 kB |
| 10 KiB | 10 × 1.024 |
10.24 kB |
| 100 KiB | 100 × 1.024 |
102.4 kB |
| 1000 KiB | 1000 × 1.024 |
1024 kB |
Interpretation
Read the result as kilobytes, not kibibytes. A value entered as KiB leaves the calculator labelled kB; this directional distinction matters even when the two units describe the same data size quantity.
Assumptions and limitations
- Only non-negative data-size values are accepted by this family.
- One byte is eight bits in this family; bit-rate and transfer-time conversions are outside scope.
- Kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte are decimal: 10^3, 10^6, and 10^9 bytes. Kibibyte is binary: 2^10 = 1024 bytes.
Common mistakes
- KiB is 1024 B; kB is 1000 B.
- The standards-consistent symbol is kB; KB is retained only as a common alias.

Assumptions

- Rounding and measurement uncertainty remain the user's responsibility.
