Interpretation
Read the result as bytes, not gigabytes. A value entered as GB leaves the calculator labelled B; this directional distinction matters even when the two units describe the same data size quantity.
Assumptions and limitations
- Only non-negative data-size values are accepted by this family.
- One byte is eight bits in this family; bit-rate and transfer-time conversions are outside scope.
- Kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte are decimal: 10^3, 10^6, and 10^9 bytes. Kibibyte is binary: 2^10 = 1024 bytes.
Common mistakes
- 1 GB is 1000000000 B; a binary gibibyte is 1073741824 B.
- A byte count does not include filesystem or protocol overhead unless that overhead is explicitly counted.
