Formula

Inventory turnover = COGS ÷ ((Beginning inventory + Ending inventory) ÷ 2)

Direct answer

Inventory turnover compares cost of goods sold with average inventory. OpenStax defines the ratio as COGS divided by average inventory and calculates the simple average from beginning and ending inventory. See Operating Efficiency Ratios.

The result estimates how many times the average inventory value is represented by COGS during the selected period. It does not count literal warehouse replacements or individual product movements.

Worked annual example

Assume annual COGS of $120,000, beginning inventory of $25,000 and ending inventory of $35,000.

First calculate average inventory:

($25,000 + $35,000) ÷ 2 = $30,000

Then calculate turnover:

$120,000 ÷ $30,000 = 4×

For a 365-day period, the implied conversion period is 365 ÷ 4 = 91.25 days.

Keep cost bases compatible

COGS is a cost measure, so the inventory denominator should also be valued on a compatible cost basis. Using sales revenue in the numerator and inventory at cost in the denominator mixes two bases and changes the meaning of the ratio.

Beginning inventory, ending inventory and COGS should also represent the same business scope. Do not combine company-wide COGS with inventory from one warehouse or product family.

The two-point average can hide seasonality

A simple beginning-and-ending average is transparent, but it can miss large movements during the period. A retailer with a large holiday build-up could start and end the year at similar stock values even though inventory was much higher for several months.

When monthly balances are available, compare the result with an average based on more observation points. Record the method so that changes between periods are not caused by a changed denominator.

Turnover is not a universal score

Higher turnover can release cash tied up in stock, but extremely high turnover can coexist with stockouts. Lower turnover can indicate excess stock, or it can reflect a deliberate assortment, long production cycle or seasonal purchase.

Common mistakes

  • Using revenue instead of COGS without changing the interpretation.
  • Using ending inventory rather than an average without saying so.
  • Mixing periods or business units.
  • Comparing annual and monthly turnover as if their time bases were identical.
  • Assuming a higher ratio is always better.

Limits of this calculator

The conversion period is derived from turnover using the entered days in the period. It is an approximation and differs from methods that use ending inventory directly. The tool does not forecast demand, value obsolete stock or choose a purchasing policy.

  • A two-point average may hide seasonality or large changes within the period.
  • Turnover should be compared within a relevant industry and period.
